Dembele Axed Out Of The Squad To Face Arsenal
Following an argument with head coach Luis Enrique, Ousmane Dembélé, a winger for Paris Saint-Germain, has chosen not to go to London for his team’s Champions League match against Arsenal, sources have confirmed to ESPN.
Luis Enrique benched Dembélé following an altercation between the two on Saturday, the day following their 3-1 victory against Rennes.
Dembélé was omitted from the squad list posted on the team’s official social media channels, and the club is in support of the coach’s choice, sources informed ESPN. The Spanish coach spoke about his choice on Monday at his press conference.
“If someone doesn’t meet the requirements of the team, it means in my opinion that they are not ready,” he stated.
“It means in such an important week, with such an important game coming up, we need every player to be fully available, and if they are not meeting expectations, there are no issues.”
It is my responsibility to lead the squad to success, and I made that choice.” Later, Luis Enrique clarified that he and the player had not argued and that he did not want to “make a soap opera” out of the situation, but he also stated that “there is a problem of commitment of the player towards the team.”
With PSG leading the division after six games, France international Dembélé has had a fantastic start to the Ligue 1 campaign, tallying four goals and dishing out four assists.
