Cole Palmer Scores Four As Chelsea Cruise Past Brighton
After twenty minutes, Nicolas Jackson made the first interception. Palmer scored with a tap after the Senegal attacker rushed on goal and squared the ball to him.
After Jadon Sancho was brought down in the penalty area, Palmer scored his second from the spot, sending Bart Verbruggen the wrong way.
After joining Chelsea last season, the former Manchester City player—nicknamed “ice Cole”—showed off his composure once more by making his tenth consecutive successful penalty shot.
At the halfway mark, Palmer finished off his hat-trick with a tasteful free kick from about 30 meters out that curved flawlessly past Verbruggen and into the upper corner.
In the 32nd minute, Carlos Baleba gave Brighton a point back following another mistake from Sanchez when he mishandled a clearing.
Just before the interval, Palmer extended the lead to four after receiving a well timed assist from Jadon Sancho. Palmer, on the rampage, became the first player in Premier League history to score four goals in the first half of a game.
With just goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to face in the second half, he missed a chance to add a fifth.
Although there were fewer goals and more defensive pressure in the second half, Chelsea was prevented from running wild by Adam Webster’s last-minute saves, chances on both ends, and improved goalkeeping.
Brighton’s perfect start to the season was terminated by the outcome, which moved Chelsea up to third in the standings.
