Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gameplay
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a life simulation game played in real-time. In the game, the weather adjusts to the seasons of the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, depending on the player essentials like a tent, the game proceeds in a non-linear fashion, letting the player play the game as he/she chooses.
As the player, you also have access to natural resources like fruit and wood which can be collected and crafted into various items and furniture known as D.I.Y. crafting.
You are also able to catch bugs and fish, plant and grow trees and flowers, extract natural resources like rocks, swim in the ocean, and are also given the option to change the terrain of the island directly.
The island gives open space for placing items and decoration as you choose. Doing simple tasks reward you with “Nook Miles” which in return you can use to buy premium rewards in Resident Services. While the other currency “Bells” can be used to buy other goods and services.
The game also offers another feature called “Dodo Airlines” – an airport via Dodo Airlines, and tickets bought through Nook Miles, You can visit other vacant islands and harvest resources, and meet other villagers. You can also invite the villagers to his/her island if he/she wants.
You start the game with two other random anthropomorphic villagers that also bought the getaway package. The villagers will live alongside you and can be interacted with, building relationships. When you have made enough progress in the game, Tom Nook will give you more freedom of expanding as a village.
Other shop owners like museum-owner Blathers, will visit and settle on the island and will display creatures that were captured by you the player. Eventually, the main area will expand to a Town Hall, run by Tom Nook with the help of Isabelle, and other buildings and villagers will populate the area, and old tents and shops will now grow into a more permanent structure that can still be moved if you want.
From there, the island will be given a star rating which will start from one, and as the island grows, the star rating increases. When a 3-star rating is achieved, a popular musician K.K. Slider, will visit and perform a concert at the island, marking the “end” of the game as the credits roll.
However, more island customization options are given to you to make the community grow – such as the ability to construct and destroy cliffs, bodies of water & paths, colloquially also known as “terraforming”.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons supports one island per Switch system. It also supports both local and online co-op gameplay, with up to 4 players locally and 8 players online able to occupy an island at any given time, an option available via the Dodo Airlines.
