In the game, the player controls a character who moves to a deserted island after buying a getaway package from Tom Nook, playing the game in a nonlinear fashion and developing the island as you choose.

The player can also gather and craft items, customize the island and form it into a community of anthropomorphic animals.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a life simulation game played in real-time. In the game, the weather adjusts to the seasons of the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, depending on the player essentials like a tent, the game proceeds in a non-linear fashion, letting the player play the game as he/she chooses.  

As the player, you also have access to natural resources like fruit and wood which can be collected and crafted into various items and furniture known as D.I.Y. crafting.

You are also able to catch bugs and fish, plant and grow trees and flowers, extract natural resources like rocks, swim in the ocean, and are also given the option to change the terrain of the island directly.

The island gives open space for placing items and decoration as you choose. Doing simple tasks reward you with “Nook Miles” which in return you can use to buy premium rewards in Resident Services. While the other currency “Bells” can be used to buy other goods and services.

The game also offers another feature called “Dodo Airlines” – an airport via Dodo Airlines, and tickets bought through Nook Miles, You can visit other vacant islands and harvest resources, and meet other villagers. You can also invite the villagers to his/her island if he/she wants.

You start the game with two other random anthropomorphic villagers that also bought the getaway package. The villagers will live alongside you and can be interacted with, building relationships. When you have made enough progress in the game, Tom Nook will give you more freedom of expanding as a village.

Other shop owners like museum-owner Blathers, will visit and settle on the island and will display creatures that were captured by you the player. Eventually, the main area will expand to a Town Hall, run by Tom Nook with the help of Isabelle, and other buildings and villagers will populate the area, and old tents and shops will now grow into a more permanent structure that can still be moved if you want.

Your island will receive a star rating, starting at one star, which will incrementally increase as your island develops and grows. When a 3-star rating is achieved, a popular musician K.K. Slider, will visit and perform a concert at the island, marking the “end” of the game as the credits roll.

Unlock terraforming tools to customize your island’s landscape, adding or removing cliffs, water features, and paths.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons supports one island per Switch system. Team up with friends: 4-player local co-op, 8-player online co-op via Dodo Airlines.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons also supports amiibo cards and figures from the series, allowing you to invite villagers to your island temporarily and potentially recruit them as permanent residents.

There are eight roof colors for you to choose from in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. These colors all cost the same price and will be changed in the same amount of time. Personalize your home with a pop of color! Your roof color choice adds a unique touch and sets you apart from the neighborhood.

How to Change Roof Color in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

To change your roof color in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will need to put in a little of the hard graft.

Initially, roof color changes are available only after paying off a loan and upgrading your home in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Unlock home customization by speaking to Tom Nook at Resident Services after upgrading to a 2-room home.

To get to the stage when you’ll have to upgrade, you will need to go through these home upgrade projects:

  • Upgrade from tent – pay off moving fees of 5,000 miles
  • Build new home – Mortgage fee of 98,000 Bells
  • Upgrade your home (Single room size expansion) – Mortgage fee of 198,000 Bells
  • Upgrading your home to add one additional room – Mortgage fee of 368,000 Bells
  • Upgrade your home to add two extra rooms – Mortgage fee of 548,000 Bells

Animal Crossing Roof Colors

Upgrade to 2 rooms, then visit Resident Services for Tom Nook’s home customization announcement. And during the conversation with Tom Nook, he’ll ask you what color you’d like your roof to be. Simply select the color from the options that appear.

Complete your house upgrade, then restart the game the next day to find your roof color has changed.

Complete Tom Nook’s upgrades and unlock roof color customization, available anytime. Specifically, you will need to build your home and then get the next three upgrades. Unlock next steps: Pay off 548,000 Bell mortgage and add two rooms to your initial home, totaling three rooms.

Now, you can go and speak to Tom Nook in the Town Hall and choose the option “About my home” then select “I want to customize”. This will cost you 5,000 Bells each time you change it, and the color change will only be effective the next day.
